Does art really have nothing to do with knowledge? Is there not a claim of truth in the experience of art, certainly different from that one of science, but equally and certainly not able to be subordinated to it? And is it not the task of aesthetics precisely to provide the theoretical basis of the fact that the experience of art is a sui generis way of knowing, different of course from that sensitive knowledge that science provides with the data on which it builds the knowledge of nature? And isn’t it also different from every moral knowledge of reason? And, in general, isn’t it different from all intellectual knowledge, but nevertheless still knowledge, that is, participation in truth? H.G. Gadamer, Verità e metodo, Bompiani, Milano 1983.
